Setting up DNC for continuous part production

For any of the Calmotion products, if the G-code programs are setup correctly and the correct steps are used, the Calmotion will continuously and automatically repeat a program during DNC.

The CNC program needs to end with the correct end of program M2 or M30. These codes will end the program and put the CNC back into "WAITING" mode.

Next make sure the DNC mode of the Calmotion unit is used. The DNC mode will automatically send the same program file over and over again. But the end of program G-code must be in the program file so that the CNC stops at the end of the program. Otherwise, the program will run over and over again.

Note: On the Fadal products, there is an option to only disable the automatic repeating of the same file. This is only for very specific instances. Do not use the DNC=ONE TIME featur…

Waiting on packet…

I have my unit plugged into a fanuc OM and when trying to retrieve a program, (cnc to usb) I get the box ready to retrieve information, pull up the desired program on my fanuc and hit “punch” it then appears with the “Waiting on packet” message on my box. Doesn’t go away. It worked before but now it only creates the file with no substance. Help is appreciated

“Waiting on packet” indicates that current setting for flow control is set to X-modem. So that would be your issue since Fanuc does not support that flow control.

Go to Settings. Then to Flow Control, most like the Fanuc is set to use XON/XOFF, so choose SW XON/XOFF. Otherwise the other choice your machine is using is the HW RTS/CTS.

For the future, write down all the settings that work with each machine. Also, in Settings, choose Save Setting. This will allow a file to backup the current settings. The file will be saved on the USB disk in the INI directory. Any file name can be used.

What type of media to use with USB or LAN products? What files need to be on the media?

For the LANCNC and LANUSB products. Use a standard SD card SDHC type.  It must be FAT32 format. SD cards 32GB and smaller typically come already set to FAT32.

USB disks must be FAT32 format. Typically 32GB and smaller come already set to FAT32.

There are no required files the SD card or USB disk, they can be blank. The LANCNC.INI and USBCNC.INI files are only used temporarily to modify certain settings on the Calmotion unit. The file does not need to stay on the disk because once the settings are loaded they are saved into the unit. After successful configuration using the INI file, make a print a copy, or save the file somewhere else if it is needed to reload in the future.  It is recommended to delete the INI file from the SD or USB disk when configured.

Attached a sample of the INI for USBCNC Fadal products. And…

That is exactly what I have. I even put it on a blank SD card so it would read it but my IP wont change. I will email you the file.

Unit has been working for years but recently stopped working

The display does not light up? Check cables and power going to the Calmotion board. Also note that the gray display cable should not be more than 7 feet long.

The Calmotion operates but fails with the communication:

The most common cause is that the parameters on the Calmotion unit got changed accidentally. Or the CNC controls parameters where changed.

  1. If the parameters of the machine and Calmotion where originally written down somewhere, check that first.

  2. Check the cables have not disconnected.
